Aachen/Stolberg (ots)

on Tuesday evening, August 27, 2024, there was a dramatic incident in Stolberg when a motorcyclist tried to escape the police. Around 10 p.m., the officials noticed a man on a motorcycle on Strip on Rathausstraße who immediately increased his speed when he saw the police car. The subsequent persecution turned out to be dangerous and chaotic.

The motorcyclist ruthlessly accepted more than 7 kilometers long escape routes and exceeded the permitted speed several times, up to 100 km/h in areas where only 50 were allowed. He overtook other vehicles despite oncoming traffic. This could have created potentially dangerous situations for other road users. In addition, his motorcycle touched a car that was waiting at a red traffic light, but there was no personal injury.

a risky maneuver

The chase finally ended in a dead end in the street "Weiern", where the police pulled the 43-year-old from his motorcycle and fixed with handcuffs. This happened to prevent it from fleeing further. The abruptly ending maneuver quickly revealed the reasons for the panic escape of the man.

At a first check, the police found that the motorcyclist did not have a valid driver's license for motorcycles. In addition, the motorcycle was not registered, and the license plates and the badges were fake. Did drugs play a role in this event? A look into his pocket revealed various plastic bags that were filled with narcotics. This asked the police before the question of whether the suspect may have been under the influence of drugs when he went on the risky journey.

Investigations run

The man was immediately arrested and is now suspected of having been punishable not only because of driving without a driver's license and the fake license plates, but also because of the possession of narcotics. In addition, a blood sample was taken from him to test the suspicion of influencing drugs. Both the motorcycle and the drugs found were ensured while the police continued their investigations.

For those responsible, the incident was further proof that dangerous behavior in road traffic can have serious consequences. The police regularly appeal to road users to act responsibly and to adhere to the applicable laws. In this case you can only be happy that no uninvolved people were seriously harmed.

The total amount of the crimes that could be charged to the man may be remarkable and will be examined by the authorities in the coming days. The search shows that the police are determined to prevent such incidents in the future and to ensure safety in road traffic.

Legal consequences for traffic offenses

The escape from the police and the associated crimes are relevant in Germany. According to § 315c of the Criminal Code (StGB), a risk to road traffic can result in serious punishments. Among other things, this includes driving without a valid driver's license and the operation of a non -approved vehicle. In addition, the use of fake license plates in accordance with Section 267 of the Criminal Code can be punished as a forgery of documents. In the present case, the driver could not only count on a prison sentence, but also with license withdrawal and high fines.

The ensuring of narcotics also means that a procedure for violating the Narcotics Act (BTMG) may also be initiated against the man. It should also be mentioned here that the driving style, which may be under the influence of drugs, can have legal consequences, including the order of a medical-psychological examination (MPU) to recover the driving license.

Current statistics on traffic offenses in Germany

According to the police, there were a total of 2.6 million registered traffic accidents in Germany in 2022, of which about 2.8 percent are due to driving without a valid driver's license. However, the number of unreported cases is probably much higher, since many are traveling without a driver's license without being caught by a police check. In addition, the abuse of drugs and alcohol in road traffic is still a serious problem; Around 13,000 traffic accidents are attributed annually to trips under the influence of drugs.

Prevention in this area is becoming increasingly important. Programs that aim at education and sensitization could help increase traffic safety and minimize such incidents in the future. The cooperation between schools, municipalities and the police is increasingly being used.

The social dimension of drug abuse

Drug abuse has complex social causes and effects. Socially, it is often associated with stigmatization and exclusion. Many affected people not only struggle with dependency, but also with financial, social and psychological problems that are reinforced by drug abuse. In Germany there are numerous offers of help that are supported by specialist specialized organizations such as the Federal Center for Health Education (BZGA). They promote preventive measures and the rehabilitation of those affected to reduce the negative effects on society.

A preventive approach that includes information about risks and help offers could help fewer people get into similar situations. The creation of a former drug-dependent perception area in society could be a further step in the right direction in order to promote a better understanding and empathy for affected people, as the BZGA strives.
