Migratory losses in Freiburg: the surrounding area attracts more Germans

The migration movements within Germany show more and more that people are increasingly leaving life in big cities and moving to more rural regions. This phenomenon is particularly observed in Baden-Württemberg, where the emigration of German citizens from urban centers such as Karlsruhe, Ulm and Freiburg im Breisgau takes place.

The trend towards emigration

The current statistics reveal that around 80 percent of the migration deficit in Ulm no longer applies to emigration to the surrounding area. Karlsruhe is even more affected, where almost 90 percent of the emigration went to the districts of Karlsruhe and Germersheim in Rhineland-Palatinate. These numbers show that more and more people exchange the advantages of life in the city for calm and space in the surrounding area.

Freiburg: A special case

The situation is particularly pronounced in Freiburg im Breisgau. In 2023, the city lost around 850 citizens to the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in 2023 and almost 300 to the Emmendingen district. Unlike in many other cities, Freiburg succeeds in almost comparing the loss from national suits, especially young adults. Less than 100 Germans left the city, which underlines the attractive power of Freiburg.

migration balance in total

Overall, Baden-Württemberg experienced an increase of around 83,600 people in 2023. These figures fell greatly compared to the record numbers of the previous year, but higher than in 2016 to 2021. It is remarkable that around 20,500 German citizens left the federal state during the migration balance among the foreign population. This raises questions about the reasons for these changes.

The role of the foreign population

The State Statistical Office states that the number of foreign citizens in Baden-Württemberg has increased to almost 2.1 million, which means an increase in the share in the total population to 18.5 percent. Among these are around 369,800 those seeking protection, of which around 124,720 come from Ukraine. This shows a pronounced urban-country gap: foreign nationals often live near workplace centers, i.e. in larger cities, which continues to change the social structure.

The importance of migration movements

The migration trends in Baden-Württemberg have far-reaching effects on local communities. While the emigration from large cities certainly strengthens the infrastructure in more rural areas, it presents cities with challenges such as the shortage of skilled workers and a changed demographic structure. The interplay of migration (invasion) and emigration not only shapes the social structure, but also the economic stability of the affected regions.

In summary, it can be said that the developments in the migration movement bring about opportunities and challenges for the affected cities and regions. A comprehensive understanding of these dynamics is crucial for the future planning and development of cities and rural areas.
