Wolf sights in Baden-Württemberg: DNA analysis confirms Fund in Lonsee
A new edition of "Nature in focus": Wolves in Baden-Württemberg
Nature has a fascinating variety to offer, but sometimes people and animals come into conflict. A current topic that attracts attention in Baden-Württemberg are the increased views of wolves. Individual animals have been detected in various communities in the country since 2015, including in Lonsee in the Alb-Donau district.
The role of wolf in nature
The wolf, strictly protected at international and national level, ensures discussions between conservationists and farmers. While some emphasize the protection and importance of these animals, others see the growing wolf population with concern, especially when farm animals are torn like sheep.
In order to determine the presence of wolves without a doubt, the responsible ministry conducts genetic studies, which are divided into different categories. For example, a distinction is made between scientific evidence such as photos, genetic evidence or telemetry locations and less confirmed information such as observations or calls.
The latest evidence of wolves in Baden-Württemberg
In May 2024, wolves were spotted in the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Rastatt and Lörrach, whereby an individual animal could even be identified in the latter. The presence of a wolf was also confirmed in March 2024 in the Hohenlohe district. It should be noted that the wolf plays an important role in the local fauna of Baden-Württemberg, the protection and coexistence of which must be carefully weighed up.
