Celebrate peace: the focus of the Augsburg Peace Festival 2024 in the focus

The Augsburg Peace Festival has developed into an important event for the city that goes far beyond the festive framework. This tradition will be celebrated again on Thursday, August 8, 2024, and preparations are already underway. But what exactly does this holiday mean for the residents of Augsburg and beyond?

Friedensfest 2024: A holiday with history

The Peace Festival, which has been celebrated as an official holiday in Augsburg since 1950, has its roots in the Thirty Years' War. On August 8, 1629, Protestants were denied the exercise of their faith. It was only many years later that their rights were taken into account with the Westphalian peace. The first peace festival took place in 1650 and symbolized the end of this oppression. Augsburg takes this day as an opportunity to set a sign of tolerance and multi -religiousness.

The program: Diversity and encounter

This year's motto of the Peace Festival, "Democracy", celebrates the 75th birthday of the German Basic Law. The celebrations begin on July 20 with a colorful cultural program that includes over 50 events at 37 different locations. From theater performances to interactive art exhibitions to concerts and a poetry slam-there is something for every taste.

The traditional ecumenical family service, which takes place at 10 a.m. in the Evangelical Church of Heilig Kreuz. In the afternoon, the children's peace festival is celebrated in the botanical garden and zoo from 12 noon to 5 p.m., while a festival concert is scheduled at 7 p.m.

The peace boards: Eat and celebrate together

One of the central traditions of the Peace Festival is the "Peace Stable", which will take place at Augsburg Rathausplatz. Here, the citizens are asked to bring something to eat themselves and share them to talk and meet friends. This type of mutual food promotes exchange and coexistence in the city.

The peace booths are organized not only on Rathausplatz, but also in various districts such as Hochzoll, Herrenbach and Göggingen, which the celebrations are in the entire city and promotes a broad participation.

The meaning for the community

The Peace Festival is not only a legal holiday, but also a platform for citizen interaction and cultural exchange. At a time when social divisions are often discussed, the festival offers an important opportunity for dialogue and understanding between the different faiths and cultures in Augsburg. It underlines the role of the city as a "peace city" and its obligation to become an open, inclusive community.
