Plan for sustainable management of the Dachau city forest presented until 2042

Expert enthusiastic about the condition of the Dachau forests - citizens demand better quality control in the forestry plan

The city forest in Dachau is not only a place of relaxation and a habitat for numerous animal and plant species, but also an important water reservoir. The city of Dachau has therefore presented a plan that regulates the rational management of its 131 hectare forest area. Forest experts like Marco Koch praised the good condition of the Dachau forests and emphasized that a long -term forestry plan is essential to effectively manage the municipal forests and to maintain their diverse functions.

View of the Dachauer Wald

The specialist Marco Koch was full of praise for the current condition of the forests in Dachau. Different tree species such as the frequently encountered mountain haorn and ash, beech, oak, birch and pine shape the city's forests. The spruce stock, which took almost three quarters of the area in the 1980s, is slowly disappearing. Thanks to successful measures, the forest was successfully converted into a deciduous forest. Due to their diversity, the Dachau forests carry numerous functions, whereby a forest area can perform several tasks at the same time. A large part of the city forest serves relaxation, with 70 percent being protected and preserving as a spell forest.

demand for improvements in the forestry plan

The alliance for Dachau has made an urgent application to achieve improvements in the current forestry plan. According to the application, there was no transparency and justification both in the session template and in the presentation of the plan. The alliance calls for the inclusion of specialist associations such as the BUND nature conservation and the urban climate protection department to ensure the quality of the plan. A forest in particular next to the sewage treatment plant, in which endangered species live, is to be taken out of the management.

Although four natural forest areas in the urban forests are already promoted and not managed by a program for contract nature conservation, the city councils see no acute need for action. The majority of citizens are satisfied with the care of the forests. Therefore, they rejected the alliance's application and adopted the forestry plan. Only Michael Eisenmann from the alliance voted against it.
