BAföG funding in 2023: insights into the change in the educational landscape
Wiesbaden (ots)
Educational funding in Germany has taken an interesting turn through the new expenditure for the Federal Education Promotion Act (BAföG). In 2023, the financial resources for BAföG services were increased to a total of 3.4 billion euros, which corresponds to an increase of 14 % compared to the previous year. This represents an important step in education policy, since it shows how important the support of students and students is in an increasingly competitive world.
Development of the BAföG recipients
A total of 635,600 people were able to benefit from BAföG services in 2023. This corresponds to an increase of 5,400 people or 0.9 % compared to the previous year. It is particularly noteworthy that this number has now increased for the second time in a row after a continuous decline in the years from 2012 to 2021.
changes in the target group
The decline of students who receive full support is particularly striking. While 348 400 BAföG recipients of the maximum funding came to a pleasure, the number of fully funded students fell by 4 % to 103 200. This raises questions: Which factors ensure this retrospectively, and what does this mean for the accessibility of education at all levels?
average support and use
On average, the BAföG receivers received a monthly rate of 640 euros in 2023, which is an increase of 8 %. This number provides information about the importance of financial support for the cost of living during your studies or school. In particular, students who received 2.9 billion euros for their funding received an average of 663 euros per month.
Share of sexes among the funded
of the sponsored persons were 58 % women and 42 % men in 2023, which reflects the progressive equality of gender in education. However, it was also evident here that the habitat of the funded persons varied: While 28 % of all funding lived with their parents, the proportion among the funded students was significantly higher at 45 %.
an outlook on the future of education
The analysis of the BAföG data allows conclusions to be drawn about future education policy. The increasing number of subsidized students and the corresponding funds could be an indication of a change in the educational climate, which may result in further positive changes. In particular, the increase in funded students (+5 % to 256 200) and the stable figures among the students with full funding provide reason for hope.
The discussion about the distribution of the BAföG funds and their influence on the educational landscape will continue to be of great importance. In particular with regard to the decline in the fully supported pupils, educational policy should introduce measures in the future in order to support this group of students sustainably.
