Day of the open monument: Discover the history of the parish church of St. Cyriakus

The "Day of the Open Monument," who has been celebrated in Germany since 1993, brings a fresh air to the world of monument protection every year. On Sunday, September 8th, the Euskirchen district opens the doors to 14 historical sites. Among these monuments, the parish church of St. Cyriakus in Weyer stands out, the history of which goes back to 1187.

The parish church, which is majestically sits on a hill above the village, is not only an architectural jewel, but also houses the main bell with an interesting story. Mayor Björn Wassong recently discovered the year 1584 on the bell and immediately recognized the meaning that this 440 -year -old artifact was. He sees it as a perfect occasion to invite people into the church and to draw attention to the importance of monument protection.

The survival history of the bell

The Cyriakus bell has gone through a lot and can still be heard in the tower of the church today-a true symbol of perseverance. This bell not only survived the devastating fires from 1677 and 1684, but also the horrors of both world wars. Many other bells were melted down during this time to produce cannon tubes, but fortunately this bell was spared and returned to their place after the wars.

in 1917, during the first deliveries, the bell was accidentally not taken away, which was considered miracle. Likewise, it was not removed in 1942, although a larger bell from 1823 fell victim to melting. According to Wassong, the bell was probably cast directly in Weyer, which already has a special meaning for the region.

Experience tours and exhibitions

In addition to the impressive bell,

On Monument Day, visitors can also visit the original bell core, which was uncovered during renovation work. At the old castle in Weyer, where the cast of the bell is said to have taken place, there will be the opportunity to experience this exciting part of the story up close. In addition, the pea soup, coffee and cake are offered in the youth home to host visitors.

The organization of the event is excellent. Guided tours of the bell tower are planned between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., but prior registration is recommended to meet the high demand. The tours in the church also include a special highlight: organ concerts, in which the talented church musicians Erik Arndt and Stefan Weingartz will spoil visitors at 12 and 3 p.m.

The day of the open monument is not only limited to the parish church of St. Cyriakus; A total of 14 monuments open their doors in the area this year. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., these places offer a variety of activities and insights into the history of the region. In the city of Euskirchen, among other things, the old pastorate and the church of St. Martinus can be visited. In Zülpich, the cathedral goal will also be accessible to visitors, as will the Kurkölnische Landesburg, which offers various tours.

The diversity and wealth of the cultural sites in the district of Euskirchen show the deeply rooted history of the region. Be it the old smithy in Schleiden or the various monuments in Vlatten, there is a lot to discover on the "Day of the Open Monument" for those interested in history and culture.
