Young trainees strengthen media literacy through a newspaper project in Dithmarschen
The importance of the print edition in the digital era
At a time when digital media are becoming increasingly dominant, the trainee newspaper project of Boyen's media and the Dithmarschen Chamber of Commerce and Industry shows how valuable print media can be for young people. This project, which was particularly important for the participants from Dithmarschen in recent months, not only promoted media literacy, but also enriched the daily reading behavior of the trainees.
a year full of reading experiences
With the start of their training in summer, Leif Sommer (17) and Moritz Wiborg (18), together with other trainees, began to regularly receive a freshly printed newspaper. Every day they received the latest edition from Boyen's media and also had access to digital formats such as e-paper and smartphone apps. Nevertheless, the two young people decided to rely on the traditional print edition. Leif Sommer describes his morning ritual: "With the newspaper you can sit down and read in peace," he says, while leafing through the current news at home in Hollingsted.
The advantages of the newspaper reading
The participants noticed an improvement in their communication skills: "You can talk and have a say," explains Moritz Wiborg. This newly gained knowledge was not only carried out in political classes in the vocational school, but also in everyday life, such as family celebrations. While Sommer is primarily interested in sports messages, Wiborg focuses on regional articles. For him, the newspaper offers a valuable source to stay informed about what is happening in the neighboring villages.
competence through regular reading
The monthly online questionnaires As part of the project, the participants asked to discuss and decrypt articles from various areas such as politics, business, sports and local things. This examination of the content strengthens the media literacy of the young career starters and shows the relevance of the print edition in an increasingly digitized world.
conclusion: tradition meets modern
The trainee newspaper project illustrates that despite the availability of digital offers, the print edition is still very important, especially for young adults. Leif Sommer's decision and Moritz Wiborg to choose to read on paper illustrates how much the usual form of reading is associated with deceleration and enjoyment. This could be a sign that print media will continue to take an important place in everyday life in many people in the future.
