Direct robots: Dresden symphonists celebrate innovative premiere!

The Dresden symphonists rely on innovative machine power with their “Robot Symphony” project, which is presented on the occasion of their 25th anniversary in the Hellerau Festival House. The most striking innovation? Robots conduct the orchestra! Inspired by the complex composition "Studies for Player Piano" by composer Conlon Nancarrow, director Markus Rindt dared to teach robots of conducting after earlier efforts at VW failed.

The challenges are enormous: robots can imitate precise movements, but the subtleties of a human conductor, such as facial expressions and dynamic forms of expression, are difficult to reproduce. While the orchestra is oriented towards the movements of the robots, they cannot react to the music. The concert offers exciting works, including Wieland Reissmann and John Williams. On Saturday, October 12th and Sunday, October 13th, the experience is enriched by the participation of human and robotic conductors, which makes the festival for digital art a special highlight.
