How artificial intelligence changes political information procurement

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) for procurement of information is on the rise in society. A current survey has shown that about one in five Germans aged 16 to 65 used AI systems such as Chatgpt to find out about political issues. The trend in generation Z is particularly pronounced, where more than every third uses this technology. The survey was carried out by the IU International University, based in Erfurt and comprises around 1,200 people.

growing interest and challenges

The Chancellor of the University, Alexandra Wuttig, commented on the results: "The numbers show that technology is accepted. But that is definitely more able to increase." This indicates the potential that AI has in the political information landscape. With the upcoming Bundestag elections, an increase in the use of AI systems such as Chatgpt for information procurement is expected. This could significantly change the way in which citizens deal with political issues.

skepticism towards Ki

Despite the positive development, there are significant concerns among users. The survey showed that 73 percent of those surveyed are concerned that AI technologies could be abused to manipulate information. In addition, about two thirds of the respondents expressed the fear that incorrect programming of AI systems could lead to inequalities and discrimination. This skepticism is particularly pronounced in Germany compared to many other countries.

the need for reflection

Wuttig explained that it was important to critically question the answers from AI systems. She sees parallels to social media, where caution is also required. "You can easily ask a chatbot about your sources," said Wuttig. With a conscious handling and a critical attitude towards the procurement of information by AI, the technology for society could be of great benefit.

A look into the future

The discrepancy between acceptance and skepticism towards AI shows that a prudent handling and a profound examination of the possibilities and risks of technology are essential. Wuttig appealed not to ignore the positive aspects, such as time savings and efficiency. This is the only way to keep up in international comparison with the progress in AI technology and at the same time gain the trust of the population.

With the next elections and the growing influence of technologies such as chatt, this trend could not only change the political landscape, but also the social discussion about information procurement and trustworthiness of news.
