Safety concerns of EU citizens: what the survey reveals

Brussels - The security of the European Union is increasingly perceived by the citizens as a pressing topic. A current survey carried out on behalf of the European Commission shows that almost two thirds of Europeans are concerned about security within the Union. The survey surveyed more than 25,000 EU citizens between the ages of 15 and older and was carried out online by the IPSOS opinion research institute between the end of June and early July 2023.

These views clarify that the citizens are calling for a balanced and holistic approach to the EU.

Opinions about the economic future of the EU are shared. Around 50 percent of the respondents are confident about economic development in the next five years. In contrast, 45 percent express skepticism. This could indicate that economic uncertainties also contribute to the general concern about the security and stability of the EU.

Overall, the survey shows that numerous EU citizens are concerned and concrete topics that are close to their heart. The priorities that the respondents set can serve as guidelines for political decision -makers to make a happy and safe future within Europe.
