Media literacy for the little ones: New daycare project starts in Hessen
media education for the youngest: a new approach of health awareness
A new pilot project in Hesse will start in twelve daycare centers (daycare centers) from September 2024, which aims to promote the media literacy of small children. The Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) has launched the “Webby Versum” program with the support of the University of Greifswald and the Blickwechen association.
Why is media education important?
The early examination of digital media is becoming increasingly important. At a time when children come into contact with smartphones and tablets at a young age, it is crucial to train them in dealing with these technologies. Media education is intended to help develop healthy and confident use of digital content and to minimize possible health consequences through excessive media consumption.
The goal of the project: playful learning
The “Webby Versum” project has the goal of giving children of preschool age the opportunity to learn a reasonable use of digital media through creative activities. An example from the project is an app with which children can photograph their own animals themselves and bring them together in a virtual farm. Such playful elements should make learning easier and convey the children to deal with the media.
support for educators
To ensure that the daycare centers are optimally prepared for the introduction of the program, the association Blick change will train employees in the application of the materials. Careful training ensures that the educators can successfully convey the content. In addition, the University of Greifswald will evaluate the effectiveness of the project in order to measure its influence on the media literacy of the children.
scope of the project
«webby verum» will not only be implemented in Hesse as a pilot project in six other federal states. The step to anchor media education in early childhood could be an important milestone for future educational approaches in Germany. The Techniker Krankenkasse promotes this innovative approach to secure the well -being of children in the long term.
Overall, the project offers a valuable opportunity for children, parents and educators to deal with the importance of digitization and to develop responsibly access to modern media.
