The new SPD face: Matthias Miersch becomes general secretary!

The SPD is preparing for the election campaign - and has found a new Secretary General! Matthias Miersch, the deputy group leader, temporarily takes on the role of Kevin Kühnert, who has resigned for health reasons. The 55-year-old Miersch, in parliament since 2005 and known for his strong networking, is expected this afternoon at a press conference in the Willy-Brandt-Haus to officially announce the decision. With it, the tumbling chancellor party is supposed to get new momentum, while the current SPD survey values are only 16 percent, i.e. half as strong as the Union.

The support for Miersch already comes from various sides, including Dirk Wiese, another faction vice. Wiese was convinced that Miersch will master the challenge. FDP general secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai wished him a good start to the new position. Meanwhile, Kühnert's resignation provided cross-party respect and wishes, including CDU politicians who praised his cooperation. The SPD is now faced with the task of reorming itself and winning back voters, while Miersch strategically leads the preparations for the Bundestag election campaign.
