practical training in focus

A new training method is tested in the DRK nursing school in Kiel, which creates a direct connection between theoretical knowledge and practical application by using a realistically designed practice room, the so-called "skilllab". The trainees can train their skills and make mistakes here under realistic conditions on the dummy, a human -like doll, without being afraid of negative consequences.

The role of the trainers

The trainers, René Thiel and Theresa Wagner, use modern technologies such as cameras and microphones to record the exercises of the students. According to the practical units, there are feedback rounds in which the participants can reflect on their services. This is intended to help strengthen confidence in your own skills. According to Thiel, it is important that the trainees can put inhibitions: "Here we have the opportunity to practice and improve them in a closed room in which errors are allowed and can be made."

The concept of the "Skillslab"

The "Skillslab" is furnished like a hospital room and offers the students the opportunity to measure different nursing disadvantages such as blood pressure and pulse, change associations and to practice creating infusions. This practical training allows prospective nurses to refine their skills at any time and to repeat the processes several times.

insights into the exercises

The trainee Ida Kebang, which is in the second year of training, has already tried out her skills when measuring blood pressure. "I felt good - Mr. was a very nice patient, that's not always the case," she says with a laugh, after working with the dummy. Even if the dummy is not alive, the interaction helps to promote self -confidence in dealing with real patients.

growing interest in nursing calls

The growing need for qualified nurses in Germany is also evident in the introduction of such innovative concepts. The state of Schleswig-Holstein promotes the implementation of "Skillslabs" at the DRK academies with funding of 236,900 euros. In the future, these training rooms will be established at all five DRK academies in the country, which will make the training even more practice-oriented and the students are better prepared for the challenges in the professional field of care.
