WEMAG publishes comprehensive sustainability report 2023 for the region

Schwerin - Wemag presented its sustainability report for 2023 and thus not only illuminates its own corporate activities, but also the associated effects on the region and the environment. The report is an important step towards transparency and contains essential information about the 38 subsidiaries of the company and 42 participations.

responsible corporate commitment

In accordance with the United Nations's sustainability goals, Wemag specifies a clear direction for her business. Board Caspar Baumgart emphasizes that the approach to sustainability includes the three dimensions of ecology, economy and social issues. This comprehensive view ensures that all actions of the company also have positive effects for the community.

increase in green electricity use

The distribution of tested green electricity is particularly remarkable: in 2023, 114,500 customers with TÜV-Nord-certified "Wemag Eastrom" were supplied. The energy comes mainly from hydropower, supplemented by biomass, solar and wind energy as well as landfill. As a result, WEMAG customers were able to save a total of 122,541 tons of CO2 compared to the national average. Such savings are not only environmentally friendly, but also contribute to the general air quality in the region.

investments to increase network resilience

WEMAG Netz GmbH made extensive investments of 96.1 million euros in the power grid in 2023, which corresponds to almost tripling compared to 2018. These measures are crucial to improve the infrastructure in view of the challenges of climate change. "Storms and floods require robustness online, and we succeed through modernization and automation," explains Baumgart.

mobility and environmental protection

In the area of corporate mobility, sustainability is also increased. The Wemag fleet now comprises numerous electrical and hybrid vehicles. In 2023, around 18 tons of CO2 emissions were avoided by using these vehicles. With a total of 66 charging points at the WEMAG locations, the company also encourages its employees to use environmentally friendly driving.

commitment in the region

However, WEMAG's commitment goes beyond operational measures. The company is actively involved in the region and has collected over 277,711 euros for local projects since 2018. This includes initiatives such as the wildlife rescue MV and the support of the annual eel stock in the lakes of Mecklenburg. Such projects not only strengthen the feeling of community, but also promote the preservation of biodiversity in the region.

outlook for 2024

Wemag plans to continue to look into the future of continuing to continue to promote sustainability. A new partnership with the Mecklenburg State Theater Schwerin as part of the nationwide initiative Culture4Climate shows how cultural and ecological goals can be linked. This cooperation is an example of how companies look beyond their own box and stand up for a common goal.

FAZIT

WEMAG impressively shows that sustainability is a central concern for all areas of society. The company makes an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions and promoting sustainable practices in the region. The steps that are taken to protect resources and protect the environment have long -term positive effects for future generations.
