Marco Scherf: A district administrator withdraws due to health problems

Marco Scherf, the first Green District Administrator of Miltenberg, has recently announced that it will no longer run in the upcoming local elections in 2026. The reason for this decision is a personal health setback: Scherf has been suffering from heavy migraines for some time now, which has proven to be a highly restrictive health problem.

"For over a year, I have not been able to effectively reduce the increasingly clear health restrictions," said Scherf in an open letter to the population. Despite numerous treatment approaches, pain relief has so far failed to materialize. This has led to a reflection on his role as a district administrator, since his own claim and the possibilities of his health are increasingly drifting apart.

A remarkable politician

Although the district administrator can look back on an active political career in Bavarian local politics, he has asked himself great challenges, not least during the Ukraine War. Scherf was alerted early on the overcrowding of refugee accommodation when others were not yet aware of it. He even contradicted the former Chancellor Angela Merkel, who had said: "We can't do it." This brought him a lot of attention in the media and a nationwide level of awareness.

His political beginnings are also remarkable: Scherf was a member of the Junge Union before moving to the Greens in 1994. Despite the challenges that the change to such a party in Bavaria can bring, he managed to be elected district administrator in 2013. In the subsequent local elections in 2020, he was confirmed with almost 70 percent of the votes in office, which speaks for his politics and public support.

Scherf lives with his family in Wörth am Main and has a great responsibility both as a politician and as a father of four children. He would like to continue, but in view of his longing wishes to do the best possible work for the district, he decided to end his political career at the end of the legislative period. After a planned break, he would like to reorient himself professionally.

Despite his health problems, Scherf emphasized that he wants to do everything he can to do the best possible work for the Miltenberg district until the end of his term. The decision to withdraw himself was not easy for him because he sees the office of the district administrator as the "task of his life". In these challenging times, Marco Scherf shows what it means to take responsibility and to recognize his own limits.
