80 years of Bunker Fuchsbau: Restries from the GDR era reveal!
Fürstenwalde, Deutschland - The bunker “Fuchsbau” in the Rauener Bergen, which was once built by Nazis forced laborers, celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. Originally built as a secret military installation for the SS during the Second World War, the system was later used in the GDR by the National People's Army and controlled airspace until reunification. Today the bunker is a museum and recently opened its doors to visitors who can learn more about the impressive story.
The tours are in great demand and offer a look at the different epochs of the bunker. Visitors cross a 40 -meter -long passage and experience the complex located underground, which extends up to 25 meters deep. Former residents, such as the Berliner Karin Tiersch, are overwhelmed by the discovery of the mysterious place. "We have not guessed what is down here," she says, remembering the secrets that the GDR hid over the bunker. On the occasion of the anniversary, a brochure that summarizes the history of the facility was even published, as well as the voluntary work that made it possible.
