100 years of Osnabrück youth welfare: journey through time through youth welfare

The youth welfare office in Osnabrück celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. This remarkable achievement is recognized by a special exhibition and an accompanying reading that deals with the development of youth welfare over a whole century.

The introduction of the Youth Welfare Act in 1924 marked the foundation of the youth welfare office and thus took a significant step in systematization and improvement in youth welfare in Germany. In order to clearly present the milestones of this development, Werner Rohling from the Department of Children, in cooperation with journalist Christoph Beyer, created an informative time beam. This project offers visitors the opportunity to understand the political, legal and social turning points of the youth welfare office - from the Weimar Republic to the time of National Socialism to the social changes in the student movement.

The exhibition in Stadthaus 1

The exhibition can be viewed in the foyer of the town house 1 by the end of September. Interested parties have the opportunity to click through various stations of the time beam and to learn more about significant youth welfare events in Osnabrück. Questions like "When was the first holiday pass introduced?" or "when did the legal right to a daycare place arose?" invite you to deal with the topic. In addition, archive photos from past times are exhibited, which give a lively impression of developments.

Visitors to the exhibition can not only collect historical information, but also immerse themselves in the deeper meaning of the various changes in the field of youth welfare. This 100th anniversary is not only a celebration of the past, but also an impetus to think about the future and the influence of youth welfare.

reading on an often overlooked topic

In addition to the exhibition, a reading will take place on September 24, 2024 from 7 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. The author Lena Gilhaus will read from her book under the title "Supplement children - a repressed story". This reading is organized together with the Volkshochschule Osnabrück and highlights the often taboo topics from the 1940s to 1970s.

Entry to this reading is free, which offers an excellent way to familiarize yourself with this often overlooked chapter in history. The history of the sending children, i.e. the children who were housed in special institutions during this time, is an important part of German history, which illuminates both emotional and social aspects that continue to have an impact.

The combination of exhibition and reading represents a valuable contribution to the culture of remembrance and education in the region. Especially in times like these, in which awareness of historical topics and its effects on the present is becoming increasingly important, the city of Osnabrück offers a remarkable format to actively deal with its own history.

These events invite you to deal more intensively with the topics of youth welfare and their development in Germany, and therefore not only offer a review of the past hundred years, but also a platform for discussion and reflection on future challenges in youth welfare.
