Jumping alarm in Phuket: Patong Beach remains careful for bathers

On the popular Thai island of Phuket, the jellyfish alarm is currently there. Numerous toxic "Bluebottles" were washed out on the renowned Patong Beach last weekend, as the "Bangkok Post" reported, which is based on information from the local marine research center.

civil servants and lifeguards discovered around 40 copies of these nettle animals, which are less dangerous than their more famous relatives, the Portuguese galleer. The penetration of these nettle animals into the coastal waters is associated with strong winds that they have driven towards the country. So far there have been no reports about stitches in tourists, which is a positive message in the current situation.

What are Bluebottles?

The "Bluebottles", scientifically known as Physalia Utriculus, are fascinating but potentially painful sea creatures. Although they belong to the same genus as the Portuguese galleys, they are smaller and mean a lesser risk for swimmers. Their characteristic bluish gas bubble, which is responsible for the buoyancy, can grow up to 15 centimeters in size and their tentacles reach impressive lengths of up to ten meters. These tentacles can cause severe pain and red streaks on the skin due to their touch, which leads to unpleasant experiences.

It is important to mention that these creatures are not real jellyfish, but large polyp colonies, with each individual taking on a specific role. An encounter with the tentacles of a "Bluebottles" can be painful, but in most cases does not lead to serious consequences, unless an allergic reaction occurs that can be fatal in rare cases.

In order to ensure the safety of the bathers, the authorities have distributed warning brochures that ask the public to exercise special caution when bathing. Rescue swimmers are ready to provide first aid in an emergency. Patong Beach, who extends over three kilometers, is known for his lively nightlife and attracts both locals and international tourists. Phuket itself is the largest island of Thailand and is located in the Andamanensee in the southwest of the country.

The situation is not only important for the bathers, but also throws a light on the fragile ecosystems of the seas and the effects of weather conditions on the sea creatures. In such situations, responsibility and caution are essential to avoid accidents and to preserve the natural beauty of the island.
