Mountainers survived 50-meter crash on the Watzmann-Südspitze
A terrifying incident occurred on August 29 in the Bavarian Alps. A 44-year-old mountaineer from the Starnberg district fell into the depths during his relegation from Watzmann-Südspitze. The incredible thing about this misfortune: the man survived, but seriously injured.
The mountain accidents in the Alps are not uncommon, but this incident has a special drama. At lunchtime, at a height of around 1,700 meters, the mountaineer was just on the way back when he lost and crashed his balance. Fortunately, a companion was at his side who immediately took action and hurried to his aid.
First aid and emergency rescue
The companion immediately provided first aid, while another mountaineer at the scene of the accident experienced the lack of a mobile phone connection as a problem. He hurried to the nearby Wimbachgrieshütte to make the emergency call from there. This happened around 12:20 p.m., at a moment when every second counted. The mountain rescue service and the emergency helicopter "Martin 1" were immediately alerted.
While the emergency helicopter flogged the scene of the accident, it was quickly localized. First the helicopter landed on the Zwischenlandplatz in the rear gravel. From there they brought an emergency doctor and two mountain rescuers to the scene of the accident. These specialists provided the injured medically on site and secured him in an air rescue bag to prepare it for transport.
The man who was crashed by the reports of the Bavarian Red Cross was lifted into the helicopter shortly after 1:30 p.m. with a special rope. The trip to the Salzburg accident hospital began, where he urgently needed medical care. In total, seven volunteers were on duty until at 3 p.m. to save the mountaineer and to provide him with the necessary help.
Such missions are an urgent proof of the constant dangers that the mountaineering brings with it, even for experienced athletes. The combination of heavy terrain and unpredictable weather conditions always demands its toll. At the same time, this incident shows the exceptional commitment of the mountain rescue service and the rescue workers, who can act quickly and efficiently in such a critical situation.
At first glance, it may seem like an ordinary outdoor accident, but the fact that the mountaineer survived after such a drastic fall is both remarkable and extremely important. The experiences in the mountains are unpredictable, and reports on rescuers and survivors are often the result of operational readiness and quick action in emergency situations.
