Open Monument Day: Discover the Votive Chapel in Berg!
Next Sunday, September 8, 2024, there is a special event in the district of Starnberg: The day of the open monument. On this day, visitors have the opportunity to explore historical places that are usually not accessible to the public. This year's motto "Truth-Sign. Witnesses of History" indicates the cultural and historical importance of the participating sites.
Highlight of the day in Berg is the votive chapel. This impressive memory chapel is reminiscent of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, which was found dead on the banks of a nearby lake on June 13, 1886, together with his personal physician Dr. Gudden. The votive chapel, which was designed by the architects Julius and Rudolf Hofmann in the Byzantine-Romanesque style, is only open to the public once a year and is open this Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission is free.
A look inside the votive chapel
take the opportunity to visit the interior of the votive chapel, which is as artistically designed as the famous rooms of Neuschwanstein Castle. The impressive painting comes from August Spieß, who was also responsible for the interiors of the castle. The chapel is an impressive example of the unique architectural style, which shapes the era of the fairytale king Ludwig II.
At 2:00 p.m. there is a 45-minute tour with the art historian Dr. Claudia Wagner. This tour offers visitors the opportunity to get deeper insights into the architectural details and the historical importance of the chapel. Dr. Wagner is known for their ability to bring art history alive and will certainly tell exciting anecdotes on the history of the votive chapel and the person of King Ludwig II.
