Brunnendörfer in Thuringia: The way to safe water supply

water shortage and its episodes in Thuringia's Brunnendörfern

In Thuringia there are still small towns, known as Brunnendörfer who have no access to a public drinking water network. These communities are particularly affected by the increasing shortage of water, which is reinforced by high temperatures and persistent drought. As a significant social issue, water supply gains urgency, especially for those affected who have to move into their drinking water from specially created fountains or local sources.

The situation on site

As the Environment Minister Bernhard Stengele (Greens) explained, the problem of water shortages in Thuringia is particularly present in the fountain villages. In 2018, the measure started in Thuringia to connect these districts to the public water supply. This initiative is important because around 450 people have already benefited from it. The minister sees the necessary pension measures, particularly in the context of the climate crisis and the challenges that it brings for the region.

Current developments in Niederarnsdorf

In Altenburger Land, more precisely in the Niederarnsdorf district of Ziegelheim, there is a current example of the successful connection to the public water supply. Here, the Water supply and waste water disposal Altenburger Land (ZAL) received a funding commitment to support the 40 inhabitants with a modern water supply. Before the connection, the old and heavily worn fountains were the only water source.

Financial support for water supply projects

Financing for the connection to the water network comes from a special program in which 60 percent of the money comes from federal funds and 40 percent are provided by the state treasury. Around 110,000 euros were made available for Niederarnsdorf to build the connection to the nearby drinking water network and the installation of a local network.

long -term perspectives for Thuringia's Brunnendörfer

The challenges of water supply affect not only Niederarnsdorf, but also other smaller communities. Currently, the prerequisites for the connection of the Göhren district of Lutschütz and the Tegwitz district of Breesen with a total of 33 residents are created. These measures emphasize the urgency to improve the water supply in rural areas and at the same time increase the quality of life of the people living there.

The progressive infrastructure improvements in Thuringia's brunnendörlers are not only a technical undertaking, but also an urgently needed answer to a growing challenge with regard to water shortages. This transformation has the potential to significantly improve the living conditions of those affected and to strengthen the resistance to extreme weather events in the future.
