The focus: a new look at Weimar's art treasure
In Weimar, the Classic Foundation plans to have a comprehensive research project on the drawings of the famous poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He not only comes from literary masterpieces such as "Faust", but he was also a passionate draftsman who held his surroundings and thoughts on paper. From the coming year, the unique existence of Goethe's drawings will be subjected to a scientific examination in order to make the outstanding works accessible to the public and research.
The President of the Foundation, Ulrike Lorenz, and the director of the foundation museums, Annette Ludwig, describe the drawings as "Heart Chamber of the Graphic Collections Weimar". The inventory comprises around 2,500 drawings of Goethe, which provide deep insights into its artistic and creative process. Interestingly, around 300 of these drawings are housed in other museums worldwide. This not only makes the collection in Weimar unique, but also an important center for Goethe research and creating.
fascination for Goethe's drawings
The drawings offer a fascinating view of Goethe's understanding of the world, its environment and his thoughts. "Goethe fathers the world, its world," explains Sebastian Giesen, Managing Director of Hermann Reemtsma Foundation, which supports this important project in cooperation with the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation. It will run by 2027 and are under the direction of the Custoden Christoph Orth, who has already focused on the GOETHEGE.
The graphics of Goethe are not only artistically valuable, but also of historical interest. They not only illustrate his poems, but also offer scientific studies on clouds and rock formations. This combination of art and science reflects Goethe's multifaceted personality who shone both as a poet and as a researcher at the time. It is noteworthy that the last comprehensive scientific processing of his drawings took place more than 50 years ago.
The initiative of the project is not only a tribute to Goethe's artistic contribution, but also an important step in the preservation and digitization of this valuable collection. With the creation of a user -friendly website, the foundation plans to address a broader public and to emphasize Goethe's relevance today. It is to be hoped that the new scientific examination of Goethe's drawings will help to keep these works of art alive in the digital age.
