At the same time, the draft RKW architecture received recognition for its transparent roof design, but the associated high costs were also viewed critically.

The selection of designs

The jury, which ultimately chose this unconventional decision -making way, saw both strengths and weaknesses in all three concepts. The creative solutions were promising, but ultimately questions about functionality and economy remained open. The draft was also praised by “Studio Qwertz” because he carefully dealt with the existing building in his overall composition. But this approach also had its defects: important 800 square meters of storage space were missing, which is of enormous meaning for a theater.

The situation is reminiscent of previous competitions in the city. In the competition for the Bauhaus Museum in 2011, there were similar difficulties than was not a clear decision among the 536 participating architectural offices. These uncertainties raise the question of how Weimar will deal with the challenge to continue to exist as a cultural hub in German -speaking countries.

Future view for the DNT

Despite the challenges, DNT managing director Sabine Rühl sees a positive view. "The result is optimistic of me.
