Associations urge law to protect against unhealthy food advertising to children - federal government under pressure!

light on the protection of children from unhealthy food advertising

An important topic currently employs more than 35 associations from different areas that jointly appeal to Chancellor Scholz: the protection of children from unhealthy food advertising urgently needs to be anchored in law. This requirement is no coincidence, but is based on the worrying findings from various studies and analyzes.

The demand for a more restrictive regulation of advertising for unhealthy foods is aimed at the Federal Chancellery and is intended to ensure that children and adolescents are not exposed to unhealthy influences from the advertising industry. Despite clear political requirements from the coalition agreement, binding regulations have so far been missing that can ensure this protection.

The reason for the urgency of this measure lies in the serious health problems that can arise from unhealthy nutrition. The World Health Organization warns of the consequences of the malnutrition in children and adolescents and therefore recommends regulating junk food advertising to prevent serious diseases such as overweight, diabetes or cardiovascular diseases.

The demand for a law to restore advertising for unhealthy foods is also aimed at the parents who have to fight the marketing tricks of the food industry every day. A stronger regulation would make it easier for parents to enable their children to have a healthier diet and to protect the health of the young generation.

The alliance of associations, organizations and specialist societies is closed and appeals to Federal Chancellor Scholz to implement the KLWG quickly and consistently as an important measure for more children's health. The health of the children should have priority over the economic interests of the advertising industry, emphasize the associations.

It is time for the government to act and protect children's health from unhealthy advertising. The future of our children depends on how we today protect them from the harmful effects of unhealthy food advertising.
