Cat elend in Bavaria: Castration obligation could help!
Cat elend in Bavaria: Castration obligation could help!
In an alarming trend, the number of stray cats in Bavaria increases dramatically. In the Berchtesgadener Land region in particular, animal shelters like that in Freilassing are struggling with overcrowding in the face of increasing shots. Ein Beispiel ist eine schmale Katze, die vor kurzem ins Tierheim kam und dort acht Kätzchen zur Welt brachte. Only four survival, while many animals are brought in in a worrying state of health - often sick and malnourished, with a serious survival rate.
Experts call for an urgently needed cat protection regulation that prescribes castration, registration and labeling of free -range cats. So far, this regulation only applies in nine of around 2,300 Bavarian municipalities. Positive results in Laufen show that registrations have increased by 40 percent and the number of strays decreases. The Bavarian Ministry of the Environment refers to the municipalities, which means that a nationwide solution to the cat problem remains uncertain. In the meantime, private foster homes have to step in to cope with the growing cat population, since the municipal animal shelters are at the limit and sometimes already imposed on admission.
