Friday of the 13th: myth or reality? Statistics clarify!
Wiesbaden - The idea of the population is circulating that Friday, the 13th, is an accident day. The question arises: is this superstition actually justified? This dreaded day appears again in September, but according to the experts at R+V Versicherung there is no reason to worry. The statisticians of the R+V have examined the damage reports on Fridays that fall on the 13th; The result could surprise the skeptics.
Rico Kretschmer, who works with regard to the damage management at R+V Versicherung, explains: "A look at our damage files shows that Friday, the 13th, is not more dangerous than other working days. On the contrary, there is even less damage here." This statement suggests that the fear of bad luck is unfounded on this date. The figures show that around 3,040 damage will be reported on Fridays that fall on the 13th. For comparison: On other Fridays there are around 80 more damage reports.
Statistical survey over two decades
The R+V Versicherung has carefully evaluated the extraordinary days of the past 20 years. The focus is not only on Friday, the 13th, but also on its occurrence in business practice. The evaluation does not offer any evidence that more damage occurs on this date than usual. On the contrary, it could be that there is more caution on a Friday, the 13th, even if the statistics cannot clearly confirm this theory.
The next Friday, the 13th falls in December and is considered with interest by the superstitious. After this date there will be a Friday, the 13th, again in 2025, and that will not be done until June. So people now have the opportunity to go through everyday life without fear of misfortune.
Despite the statistics, there is a certain level of skepticism in the air, and it is interesting to observe how deeply rooted this superstition is in society. From a psychological point of view, the perception of an accident day could even lead to people actually becoming more cautious when dealing with risks - an example of human psyche in action.
