New approach to combating the lack of teachers: dual studies at the University of Erfurt
In the current educational landscape, teachers are becoming increasingly scarce. In order to counteract this problem, the University of Erfurt has introduced an innovative dual study model for prospective teachers. But this model does not encounter approval from all universities in Thuringia.
The Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences initially expressed interest to also stand up for a dual teacher training. However, according to President Jörg Wagner, the plans in cooperation with the Schmalkalden and Erfurt universities are initially put on hold. The University of Jena, on the other hand, is actively working on a concept for the training of single subject teachers, which differs from the dual approach in Erfurt
The dual teaching degree at the University of Erfurt started at the end of April with an application phase that met with great interest. Despite only 50 available places, 240 applications were received. The students are remunerated in the bachelor's degree at 1,400 euros per month, and the remuneration increases to 1,600 euros in the master's degree. In addition, they complete internships in schools two days a week from the third semester and are accompanied there by experienced mentors.
After studying, the graduates undertake to work as teachers in Thuringia for at least five years. This step should not only fight the acute lack of teachers, but also the quality of teacher training and thus ultimately improve the educational opportunities of the students.
