International guest gifts: a unique exhibition in Gießen

insights into cultural treasures of the Justus Liebig University

Gießen-The Justus Liebig University (JLU) in Gießen presents an exciting exhibition with a variety of guest gifts from all over the world until August 30, 2024. These exhibits not only offer a look at different cultures, but also tell stories about international relationships and diplomatic exchange.

an important bridge stroke

The University of Gießen has been maintaining close contacts to universities worldwide since the 1960s, with a special focus on Eastern Europe. These relationships are symbolized by the exchange of guest gifts, which always represent a gesture of appreciation. The specialist group, which founded the seminar for the guest gifts at JLU, was made by Dr. Alissa Theiß and Prof. Cornelia Weber headed and aimed to highlight the importance of objects in historical research.

The search for the objects

As part of the seminar, the students researched the whereabouts of the gifts. These are often kept in archives or institutes from the university. Thanks to modern technologies and internet research, the students were able to find out the background of the objects. This practical work shows how historical studies can be enriched by research on site.

an example from Ukrainian history

At the opening of the exhibition, Fabian Seelbach, a master student of history, presented a remarkable object: a sting leg with a wooden wooden owl, known as Bulava. Originally a weapon, it is now perceived as a symbol of the Ukrainian state awareness. The importance of the Bulava has changed over the years and today symbolically stands for the influence of the Cossacks and the national identity of Ukraine.

versatile exhibits and tours

Visitors to the exhibition can look forward to a variety of fascinating exhibits, including a pearl -occupied vase from Romania and a traditional wooden mask from Sri Lanka. These objects are accompanied by a brochure with descriptions that make it easier to understand the cultural background. The exhibition is not only of interest for students, but also for everyone who is enthusiastic about intercultural exchange and history.

a special highlight in the rector room

The opening took place in the university's rector room, a place that is ideal for presenting these cultural treasures. Here interested parties can experience the diversity of JLU's international relationships in an appealing environment. Guided tours that can be organized on request can also be organized at collecting koordination@uni-giessen.de.

The current exhibition at the JLU not only promotes the dialogue via the gifted objects, but also the understanding of global relationships. Such cultural initiatives are of great importance for the students and the entire community in Gießen, since they illustrate the relevance of intercultural contacts in today's world.
