Fat liver in old age: Lecture on causes and treatment in Jena

The liver plays a crucial role in our body - it detoxifies, regulates the metabolism and produces essential proteins. But what happens if this vital organ suffers? A new lecture in the "Science & Society" series aims to shed light on the serious dangers of the fatty liver and becomes univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Elke Roeb held in Jena on September 12, 2024. This event is particularly relevant in the context of an aging society in which liver diseases occur.

The importance of the liver for health is undeniable. Their ability to process nutrients and reduce toxins makes them an indispensable organ. In the case of fatty liver disease, medically referred to as steatosis, excess fat is stored in the liver cells. This can lead to serious health problems, especially in older patients, in which the risk of further diseases such as diabetes or heart disease increases significantly. As part of her lecture, Professor Roeb will respond in detail to the causes and illuminate the different risk factors that can lead to such a disease.

risk factors and modern diagnostics

There are many reasons why fat can accumulate in the liver. The best known are obesity, diabetes, excessive alcohol enjoyment and even certain medication. In Germany in particular, the so-called Masld (Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease), formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, is widespread. This is related to metabolic disorders and increasingly affects people in the older population, which is reinforced by demographic change.

Preventive medicine is therefore becoming increasingly important. Professor Roeb will also present the latest developments in diagnostics in her lecture. This includes non-invasive procedures that enable doctors: inside, to recognize liver diseases at an early stage and to treat them accordingly. These methods are not only gentle for the patients, but also much more effective in order to avoid serious complications.

The early diagnosis can significantly improve the quality of life of the affected people. When treating fatty liver diseases, aspects such as nutrition, muscle strengthening and bone health must also be taken into account in older people. Professor Roeb plans to present the latest therapeutic agents that have been approved in the United States and may soon be available in Germany.

Note that this event is part of the public lecture series "Science & Society", which deals with topics in science and medicine. The series is organized by the Leibniz Institute for Aging Research and the Beutenberg Campus Jena e.V. and is available free of charge for anyone interested.
