rituals and identity in art: a new exhibition in Lübeck

In the Lübeck St. Petrikirche, the exhibition "Like a Prayer" opens on July 28, 2024. This shows work contemporary artists: inside who deal with social rituals. In particular, the focus of this exhibition is the examination of grief, community and identity, which can be seen until August 25th.

The curator Sjusanna Eremjan invited five artists for the exhibition: inside, whose works relate to the diverse rituals of modern life. A central concern of these artists: Inside, it is to explore the interaction of identity and community in their work while they represent different cultural backgrounds.

The Nigerian-German artist Ngozi Schommers shows her work series "Akwete X Catalog", which includes ten floating sculptures. These remind you of artistic braided hairstyles and relate to traditions and the commitment to the production of hair styles in southeast Nigeria. In her art, Schommers processes personal and cultural questions, in particular the stigmatization of natural hair of black women during colonialism.

Juan Ricaurte-Riveros, a Colombian artist, creates an urgent view of the topic of seeds and its importance for society with his installation “Pleedges to Life, to Peace and to Loving”. With seeds from the Andean region and colorful balloons that grow into young plants, he talks about the challenges for small farmers who are affected by conflicts and the influence of multinational corporations. His works symbolically stand for resistance and hope even in difficult times.

Belia Zanna Geetha Brückner in her installation "Hard to Say I’m Sorry" in the often inadequate way of apology. Your room installation with its oversized gift bags and pieces of furniture deals with the question of whether material gifts can be sufficient instead of sincere words to pay guilt.

With his work "2nd Memorial",

Mark Morris brings ritual T-shirts to the exhibition that is used in US communities to grief for deceased. These items of clothing, which also find a political expression, raise questions about dealing with loss and farewell. Morris invites the viewers to think about the cultural differences in the mourning process.

opening of the exhibition and accompanying program

The ceremonial opening will take place on Saturday, July 27th at 7 p.m. Pastor Dr. Bernd Schwarze and Noura Dirani, the director of the Kunsthalle St. Annen, will speak greetings, followed by an introduction by the curator Eremjan. Daiki Kimoto will also show a live performance of his interactive painting "Like a River". Admission is free for the opening.
