Borussia Dortmund is planting the future: climate trees in the Ruhr area!

In a significant step to promote environmental sustainability, Borussia Dortmund has announced its support for the “Climate Trees” campaign of the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR) and the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) 2027. This initiative, which is aimed particularly at clubs in the Ruhr area, aims to ecologically upgrade unused green spaces and thus create important habitats for reptiles, amphibians, small mammals and insects. The regional director Garrelt Duin and Horst Fischer from IGA 2027 presented the first climate trees to Marieke Philippi, head of the Corporate Responsibility department at Borussia Dortmund, which marks the official starting signal for this non-profit project.

But what exactly is behind the campaign? The “Climate Trees – Clubs Plant the Future” initiative invites all clubs in the Ruhr area to take an active part. Participating clubs receive special planting packages that contain local trees, regional seeds and other materials. The aim is not only to create ecological advantages, but also to establish lively learning places for young club members. Particularly noteworthy is the “train-the-trainer” format, through which adults are prepared for the planting activities. The clubs' commitment is crowned with family adventure days at the so-called GreenDays, which take place at selected locations.

A call to participate

Garrelt Duin emphasizes that the campaign is an open offer for all clubs in the Ruhr area and invites them to register via the website www.klimabaeume.ruhr to apply. In addition to Borussia Dortmund, well-known clubs such as Schalke 04 and VfL Bochum also support this environmentally friendly initiative. The collaboration of these clubs highlights the collaborative approach that is crucial to the success of projects of this type.

Given the current challenges in the areas of climate protection and biodiversity, it is gratifying to see how sports clubs are actively contributing to raising ecological awareness. By using their platforms, they not only help the environment, but also promote engagement and a sense of community among members.
