Opening of the cooling garden - a new place for relaxation and information in Wilmersdorf
New garden should cause cooling on hot days
The opening of a new "cooling garden" is a step that raises awareness of climate change and its effects on our cities. District City Councilor Detlef Wagner and health planner Stephan Schikorra reveal this new refuge on July 18, 2024 at 5 p.m. on the corner of Prinzregentenstraße and Waghäuseler Straße in the neighborhood garden "Kliminssel Wilmersdorf".
The increasing temperatures in summer require measures to adapt and protect the citizens. At a time when heat protection plans are published in Berlin and public shelters are made available, the opening of a cooling garden is of particular importance. The residents of the quarter can use this place to rest on hot days, to relax, enjoy nature and to find out about the importance of city green.
An important part of the opening event will be a lecture by Dr. Fred Meier from the Institute of Ecology at the Technical University of Berlin. Dr. Meier will talk about the cooling function of allotment gardens in Berlin and illuminate the central questions of urban climatology. With long -term measurements of the air temperature in Berlin, results are presented that underline the importance of green spaces for the city climate.
This new garden is not only a place of relaxation, but also a symbol for use against climate change. The creation of cooling gardens is becoming increasingly important in order to counteract the consequences of climate change in urban areas and to improve the quality of life of the residents.
