Future builder Felix Miller: This is how sustainable agriculture works today!

At the age of 28, Felix Miller, a young farmer from Baden-Württemberg, is at the beginning of a promising career in agriculture. He emphasizes that his commitment to sustainable action and responsibility towards the environment are reflected in his daily work. “I value the opportunity to learn every day,” he explains as he faces visitors to his farm shop, which attracts a long line of customers on Fridays. The farm is not only a point of sale for fresh products, but also a place for meetings and education about the principles of sustainable agriculture.

“It’s important to be open to new things and to take responsibility,” says Felix. He receives support from his family, who give him the support he needs to go his own way. Without their help, his project, which he sees as an answer to the challenges of climate change, would have been difficult to implement. “I would like to thank my parents for the space and their support,” said Miller. His approach to agriculture includes a diversity of crops that not only provide ecological benefits but also respond to the challenges posed by climate change.

Sustainable agriculture in focus

But what actually is sustainable agriculture? According to the agriculture It combines ecological, social and economic aspects with the aim of ensuring sustainability for future generations. While the intensification of agriculture brought higher yields, ecological damage such as soil loss and species extinction also contributed to increasing pressure on the environment. This challenge is already a central theme in Felix Miller's business.

Innovations in sustainable practices, such as organic farming, offer solutions to reduce environmental impact and use resources more efficiently. In agriculture, which makes up a significant part of the German economy, around 30,000 farmers are organized in the state farmers' association in Baden-Württemberg and one in ten employees is directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture. Even though organic farming is, as many believe, more environmentally friendly, it is crucial that farm managers demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, no matter what farming system they use.

Global challenges and local responses

The discussion about sustainable agriculture must also be viewed in a global context. The Connection between agriculture and climate change is particularly dramatic in the countries of the Global South, where many people are dependent on natural resources. Climate changes such as rising temperatures and unreliable rainy seasons are endangering the livelihoods of many small farmers. These problems highlight why sustainable and resource-efficient agriculture is necessary, not only to ensure food security and social justice in our region but also globally.

Felix Miller is aware of this responsibility. His farm is seen not only as a place for sales, but also as a model for sustainable agriculture. By advocating for a diversity of crops and educating his customers about the importance of sustainable agriculture, he is helping to increase awareness of these important issues. “It is up to us to shape the agriculture of tomorrow,” he summarizes his vision.

This makes it clear: Agriculture in Baden-Württemberg faces major challenges, but also opportunities. With farmers like Felix Miller who are willing to break new ground and take responsibility, the industry is looking to the future with hope.
