Climate conference in Brazil: Germany's big call to save the climate!
The countdown has begun: In a few days, the UN climate conference COP30 will begin, which will take place from November 10th to 21st, 2025 in Belém, Brazil. The conference is a very special milestone because it marks the tenth anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement. An occasion that not only reminds us of what we have achieved, but also points out the challenges that still lie ahead.
States are asked to submit their national climate protection contributions (NDCs). The goal is clear: global warming should be limited to a maximum of 1.5 degrees. But Dr. Hubert Meisinger expresses concerns that the plans submitted so far will probably not be sufficient to achieve this goal. This is where it gets exciting: How will the participating countries react to the urgency of the situation?
Demands of the Climate Alliance Germany
The Climate Alliance Germany, to which the EKHN also belongs, has already published demands for the conference in advance that focus on the need to improve the climate situation. This includes a significant increase in climate financing. In the 2026 budget, Germany is expected to increase its contribution to international climate financing to 7 to 8 billion euros and even increase it to 12 billion euros by 2030.
To achieve this, the alliance calls for the use of innovative financing sources, such as levies on air travel and fossil fuels. The implementation of a comprehensive climate protection program is also required in order to better achieve national climate goals in areas such as transport and buildings. It is also pointed out that Germany should act as a reliable partner in climate and development cooperation and support vulnerable countries.
Expand adaptation funds
Another important point is the expansion of the adaptation fund. This is about supporting countries in the Global South so that they can develop and implement their national adaptation plans (NAPs). Amid these challenges, communication remains crucial. The Climate Alliance Germany has put together a communication package to provide information about the background to the conference and to promote dialogue about these essential topics.
There is a lot at stake with the upcoming climate summit in Belém. The global community is called upon to work together to develop solutions and resolutely continue on the chosen path of climate protection. Looking at the next steps will therefore be crucial. Needs, challenges and perspectives must be discussed intensively so that future generations can grow up in an environment worth living in.
