Bremen starts a flag campaign: Good news for the climate!

The “GOOD CLIMATE” campaign month opened its doors in Bremen today. Accompanied by the unveiling of campaign banners and the hoisting of an action flag at the climbing center of the German Alpine Association (DAV), this month will be a forum for climate protection and sustainable measures. In the Bremen university landscape, participants and cooperation partners show their support for climate protection with numerous initiatives. Weser report reports broad support that extends across companies, organizations and public institutions.

A special project by the Green Office at the University of Bremen aims to combine climate and resource protection with social commitment. Old glasses are collected, processed and passed on to people in need. This initiative shows how diverse approaches to climate protection can be.

Measures and ideas for a better climate

The new app “Aktion GUTES KLIMA” supports the people of Bremen with weekly suggestions on topics such as mobility, energy and consumption. It is already available in the Apple App Store and will soon also be available in the Google Play Store. Anyone interested can also pick up buttons and stickers on the topic of climate protection free of charge in city libraries and Aleco branches. Posters that you can print out yourself are also available on the campaign's homepage so that everyone can get active.

The initiative's logo is visible everywhere - from BSAG's infotainment offerings to the flag of the Senator for Finance. The aim of the current campaign is to achieve broader visibility of climate protection in public spaces in Bremen. Future actions could then set orange signals for climate protection on a larger scale in order to reflect the urgency of the issue.

Climate protection as a global challenge

But why is climate protection so important? Climate action includes essential measures to combat human-caused global warming and is crucial to avoid catastrophic impacts. The two-degree threshold, which was recently established as a critical limit, is considered the minimum to avert catastrophic climate consequences. Carbon dioxide, the main driver of global warming, remains in the atmosphere for centuries, illustrating the urgency of our actions. Wikipedia highlights that political decisions today will have crucial long-term impacts on our climate.

A comprehensive transformation of the energy system is necessary, including dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels. These processes are important not only for Germany, but also internationally. A successful international climate policy, as required by the Paris Agreement, aims to limit global warming to below 2°C. Federal Environment Agency shows that the results of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicate that maximum global greenhouse gas emissions should be reached by 2025.

The Bremen initiative “GUTES CLIMATE” is one piece of the mosaic in a comprehensive concept. It calls for immediate action at all levels – locally and internationally – to address climate protection with the necessary urgency. Together we can work to stop global warming and create a future worth living.
