Climate display in Osterode: 231 tons of CO₂ saved at the KliMathon!

In Osterode am Harz there was a remarkable success in the area of climate protection in autumn 2025. The first KliMathon brought together 249 participants who intensively examined their CO₂ footprint over a period of six weeks. This exciting challenge – supported by the “2zero” app – enabled the participants to work on weekly topics such as nutrition, consumption, mobility and digital life and thereby actively contribute to climate protection. Participation was broad and included individuals, companies, clubs, associations and schools.

Through a total of 1,614 “challenges”, the participants were able to save over 231,911 kilograms of CO₂. This impressive figure corresponds to the emissions of a mid-range gasoline engine that travels around 50 times around the world. A real progress that the climate protection management of the city of Osterode proudly highlights in its reports. The campaign showed that the population is ready to take responsibility for their own energy consumption and to actively contribute to reducing greenhouse gases.

Gamification for climate protection

One of the key components of the KliMathon was the digital support provided by the “2zero” app. This app was specifically developed to promote sustainability and offers participants daily challenges without lengthy lectures. Among other things, elements such as collecting points, leaderboards and rewards helped to increase engagement. Over 90 municipalities and companies have already benefited from this interactive content and given positive feedback.

The topics of the KliMathon are just the beginning. Many municipalities and companies plan to use the app again in the future to further strengthen their own sustainability strategies. The versatility of the app enables different orientations for greater efficiency, be it for companies or in municipal projects. Topics such as saving energy in the workplace and digital working are on the agenda in order to promote not only CO₂ reduction but also people's health and well-being.

A global concern

The KliMathon in Osterode is not only a local highlight, but also part of a global trend that focuses on the need for climate protection. The effects of climate change are obvious: rising temperatures, extreme weather events and rising sea levels affect people, the environment and the economy worldwide. Therefore, avoiding greenhouse gases such as CO₂ and methane is a central task, which is also supported by projects such as the KliMathon.

Answers to the pressing questions of climate protection should be found using scientifically based approaches and concrete measures. Initiatives such as the development of a new, high-resolution global climate model by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) help to develop locally effective adaptation measures and thus provide an important basis for future political planning.

In summary, it can be said that the KliMathon in Osterode am Harz sent a strong signal for climate protection and thus represents an impetus for further projects in the region and beyond. The active participation and interest of the population is the key to taking significant steps towards a more sustainable world in the future.
