Future festival in Weilheim: Together for a sustainable tomorrow!

The signs point to the future in Weilheim: On Saturday, April 25, 2026, the city will be the venue for an exciting “future festival” as part of the “Climate Spring Oberland 2026”. This event promises to impart knowledge about sustainable practices and climate protection and is aimed at people of all ages. Mercury reports.

The festival, organized by the local sustainability network “Zukunftspartner”, will include various activities. Among other things, visitors can look forward to a children's rally with stamp cards and the opportunity to make solar-powered “sun glasses”. Energy advice is also offered to give participants an insight into the possibilities for saving energy. Culinary offerings round off the program.

Diverse topics and participants

Around 35 participants were present at a planning meeting in the town hall, including representatives from regional initiatives such as “Weilheim kann Klima”, the adult education center (VHS) and the Federation for Nature Conservation. These various actors work together to shed light on current topics such as regional consumption, renewable energies, heavy rain prevention and garden and urban greenery and to bring them into the focus of the population.

The importance of the “Climate Spring Oberland” for environmental and climate protection in Weilheim should not be underestimated. Alfred Honisch, the 3rd mayor, emphasizes the importance of bringing generations together and promoting an interest in sustainability. The event thus makes a valuable contribution to changing the way of life in the region.

Renewable energies in a global context

While the focus in Weilheim is on local initiatives, we take a look at the global situation of renewable energies. According to that World Energy Council Renewable energies have experienced immense growth in recent years, with around 80% of global expansion coming from these technologies. The installed capacity of wind energy has more than quadrupled since 2010 and that of photovoltaics has increased by a factor of 21.

Such developments show that global electricity generation is more reliant than ever on renewable energy. In order to achieve the climate goals of obtaining almost two thirds of global electricity production from renewable sources by 2030, massive investments are necessary. The annual expansion of around 300 GW is just a step in the right direction.

The path to climate neutrality

The role of renewable energies is also undisputed and sustainable in Germany. According to that Federal Ministry of Economics The share of renewable energies in final energy consumption for heating and cooling was 18.1% in 2024. This is supported by innovative technologies such as heat pumps, which have seen a 15% increase despite a decline in biomass use. In addition, around 256 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions were avoided through renewable energies in 2024, which further underlines the importance of these technologies.

With the upcoming “Future Festival” in Weilheim, we see how local initiatives, hand in hand with global developments, can contribute to creating a sustainable lifestyle. In this sense, the festival will not only be an entertaining event for citizens, but also a step towards a more conscious approach to our environment.
