Climate change: Lower Saxony tourism sees opportunities and risks!

What does the tourism industry in Lower Saxony expect in view of climate change? A current survey conducted by the Lower Saxony Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHKN) shows both concerned and optimistic voices. A total of around 450 companies from the region were surveyed, and the answers reveal an interesting ambivalence.

Almost a quarter of those surveyed, exactly 24.5 percent, fear negative consequences from climate change. But not everyone sees it that way. 23.6 percent of companies expect certain benefits that could arise from climate change. In particular, more pleasant temperatures in spring and autumn and the recruitment of new groups of guests are highlighted as positive developments.

Relevance of climate change for companies

A look at the numbers shows that 20.4 percent of companies have not noticed any impacts from climate change and 31.4 percent were unable to provide any assessment at all. Nevertheless, almost half of the companies are convinced that the topic is important for their future. The topic is taken seriously, particularly in the picturesque Lüneburg Heath and on the East Frisian Islands.

An interesting aspect is that around a third of companies have already implemented measures to combat the effects of climate change. This includes structural changes such as better insulation and the installation of air conditioning. However, according to the survey results, almost 80 percent of respondents see costs as the biggest obstacle to implementing such measures, followed by bureaucracy and a lack of skilled workers.

Heat protection in Osnabrück and flood risks

With regard to natural hazards, the Celle district is considered a flood risk area, as around three percent of Lower Saxony's area belongs to these vulnerable zones. Heat protection measures are already being planned for the city of Osnabrück, and similar projects are being launched in other cities. A climate impact report from the Ministry of the Environment also shows that the temperature in Lower Saxony has risen by 1.7 degrees since 1881.

These widely varying views underscore the complex relationship between the impacts of climate change and the potential opportunities for the tourism industry. Entrepreneurs who take current developments seriously and take appropriate measures could secure a long-term advantage.
