NRW is revolutionizing local transport: The new rufmobil.nrw app is here!
On December 8, 2025, a new public transport service will be introduced in North Rhine-Westphalia: the app rufmobil.nrw. This innovative application is intended to facilitate the use of on-demand transport options and help expand transport services in rural and low-demand areas. It allows passengers to order minibuses and other means of transport via a smartphone or by telephone - very similar to a shared taxi.
The app has currently been launched with the provider “Holibri” in the Höxter and Paderborn districts, and is part of a broader program that includes over 30 on-demand transport providers throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. These also include companies such as myBus in Duisburg and “Helmo” in the Soest district, which has already recorded more than 100,000 trips since its introduction four years ago.
Simplicity through digitalization
In order to use the app, a one-time registration is required. This applies regardless of whether passengers switch between different providers and municipalities. Routes are planned individually using a sophisticated algorithm, which is intended to save both time and costs. This relief is particularly appreciated in rural areas, where traditional public transportation is often limited, reports mobile.nrw.
The fares are between the regular public transport tariffs and the prices for taxi rides. It is important to mention that the cost of on-demand transport is often seven to ten times higher than traditional public transport fares. However, the price for passengers usually remains cheaper than conventional taxis, which makes this service attractive.
Funding and future
The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is supporting the introduction of these services with a generous 120 million euros until 2031. This funding is designed to make the offer sustainable and reduce costs for municipalities as soon as the funding runs out. Responsibility for staff and vehicles lies either with the transport companies or is taken over in cooperation with private providers. This shows that digital progress, such as that made by the company ioki is promoted, helps to increase efficiency in traffic planning and optimally integrate on-demand services.
At the Mobility Day 2025, which is also taking place today, not only will the new possibilities of the app be presented, but important discussions will also be held about traffic development in the region. This event mixes expert knowledge with the awarding of the Mobility Prize, which is endowed with 30,000 euros and honors innovative ideas in the field of mobility.
In summary, it can be said that the introduction of rufmobil.nrw represents a further step into the future of local public transport. Digital solutions not only improve access to transport services, but also strengthen mobility in rural regions. The coming years will show whether and how these new concepts can be established permanently.
