Lanterns made from cans: This is how children learn environmental protection in kindergarten!

In today's world, environmental protection is a central issue that should be addressed in childhood. At St. Christophorus Kindergarten we take on this responsibility in a special way. Here, not only everyday life but also special celebrations are put into the service of environmental education.

The children recently made lanterns for St. Martin's Day out of old cans. This allowed the little ones to gain practical experience in reusing materials. Sonja Islinger-Luxi, the head of the kindergarten, emphasizes that the team and the children have dealt intensively with environmental issues. The focus is on waste separation, which is part of everyday interaction in the kindergarten.

Practical learning through creative projects

The creative craft projects are not only crucial for fun, but also for raising children's early awareness of environmental protection. In 2023, around 427.5 million tons of waste were produced in Germany, but only around 40% found its way into recycling. This makes it all the more important to sensitize young people to these issues at an early stage.

In the kindergarten, yellow, blue and brown bins are used to separate waste. In this way, the children learn in a playful way what belongs in which bin. There are also varied methods such as waste courses or quiz games that make dealing with waste educational and entertaining.

Environmental awareness through projects

The joy of dealing with waste is also reflected in projects such as “Playing Garbage Collection”, in which the children become active themselves and practice the correct separation of rubbish. These practical learning methods help develop a sense of sustainability and resource conservation at preschool age.

Crafting with waste materials, such as creating costumes for parties, is another step towards reducing waste. This not only promotes creativity, but also raises awareness of the reuse of raw materials. A strong team of educators and motivated children shows that environmental protection can also be lived in everyday life - and with a lot of joy and creativity.

Such approaches in kindergarten lay the foundations for responsible action towards the environment. Hopefully these little environmentalists of today will achieve great things in the future.
