VfL Wolfsburg: Sustainable future through climate protection and innovation!
VfL Wolfsburg draws an impressive balance of its climate protection measures, which represents an important stage for 2025. Around 75 percent of the club's total emissions come from so-called Scope 3 emissions, which arise from fan mobility, purchased goods and services and the supply chains. To meet this challenge, VfL has already taken various measures that will be further expanded in the future. Among other things, mobility analyzes are carried out and more sustainable solutions for catering and merchandising are offered.
As VfL Wolfsburg reports, reusable systems and well-thought-out waste concepts are also among the club's achievements in terms of environmental protection. Particular attention is also paid to CO₂ transparency in public catering, which enables fans to make conscious decisions and promotes their commitment to climate protection. A long-term cooperation with NABU, which was initiated at the beginning of the year, is another example of the association's future-oriented strategy.
Community commitment to climate protection
But VfL is not alone in the field. Collaboration with regional partners plays a crucial role in successfully using the greatest levers of emissions reduction. The challenges should not be underestimated, but the long-term implementation of the environmental strategy with climate protection projects in areas such as mobility, circular economy and biodiversity shows that the association is determined to take the right path.
Work is being done on the future not only by investing in the rewetting of moors, which both store CO₂ and create habitats for numerous species. Fans are also actively involved through creative campaigns such as “Click for the Climate” in the online shop and interactive experience days. VfL wants the support for the “green team” to be felt not only on the pitch, but also off the pitch.
The importance of Scope 3 emissions
In general, companies have to deal intensively with Scope 3 emissions. These emissions are the most important part of the CO₂ balance because they occur along the entire value chain. This also has an impact on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which will be indirectly affected by CO₂ accounting from 2025, or can even do so voluntarily. As Vattenfall has explained, companies can benefit from efficiency gains and cost savings while at the same time improving their image through a sustainable corporate strategy.
In order to overcome the challenges of recording emissions, companies are required to collect reliable primary data. This is often complex and goes beyond exchanging emission factors with suppliers. The Alliance for Development and Climate Foundation has also responded and is offering support through workshops and materials that help companies use reliable data sources and improve their carbon footprint. The Foundation promotes exchange among companies in order to jointly develop viable decarbonization strategies.
In summary, it can be said: VfL Wolfsburg has taken the first steps in the right direction, but the journey is still long. With a clear plan and the commitment of everyone involved, the club will make important progress in the next few years that can have an impact far beyond the sports facilities.
