Climate pioneers gather in Belém: COP30 starts today!

Today, November 10, 2025, the 30th World Climate Conference (COP30) begins in Belém, Brazil. 198 Parties to the UNFCCC are meeting here to discuss the next steps in implementing the Paris Agreement. In the midst of an increasingly serious climate crisis, the urgency of the issues cannot be overlooked.

A central topic of the conference is the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which represent the greenhouse gas reduction plans of the individual states. However, expectations are muted: experts warn that the NDCs worldwide will not be sufficient to meet the associated climate targets – a maximum of 2 degrees, ideally 1.5 degrees. The adoption of indicators to measure progress towards the global adaptation goal is also on the agenda.

Financing for climate protection

Another focus of the negotiations will be climate financing. The ambitious goal of providing $1.3 trillion annually for climate protection by 2035 is to be achieved in particular by mobilizing private funds. These financial resources are crucial to take the necessary action on climate change and to provide support to the poorer countries that are most affected.

The conference is accompanied by a climate fair that serves to exchange information about the implementation of the Paris Agreement. The Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) is particularly active and is represented in the German Pavilion with the “Science for Action Evening” format. The focus will be on international cooperation in climate research. A highlight will be the presentation of the successful German-Brazilian project ATTO in the Amazon rainforest.

A platform for exchange and collaboration

The “Science for Action Evening” will focus on the motto “International cooperation in climate change research: building data, trust, and momentum for change”. Participants have the opportunity to exchange experiences on international research collaboration and discuss proposed solutions. The live stream of this event will be available on November 19, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. local time (1:00 a.m. German time).

The challenge posed by climate change has not only been known since the beginning of the UN climate conferences. Almost 200 countries have met annually for these meetings for almost 30 years, but greenhouse gases have increased by 60 percent during this time. This shows how urgent and necessary our measures are, while critical voices, such as climate researcher Mojib Latif, demand that action must finally be taken now instead of just negotiating.

The successes and failures of past conferences shape the current discussions. The Paris Agreement of 2015, which managed to reduce global warming from 3.5 to 2.7 degrees, remains a bright spot. The Paris Agreement forces states to set new climate targets every five years, which are then checked for effectiveness.

With these topics, COP30 will provide an important opportunity to advance ambitious climate policy actions and discuss redesigned cooperation models. The world is looking to Belém, where the pressure is growing to take concrete steps towards a climate-friendly future.
