Mainfranken starts Public Climate School: Actions for sustainability!

The anticipation for the Public Climate School (PCS) is growing, because a Germany-wide event will take place from November 24th to 28th, 2025, which is entirely dedicated to the topic of sustainability and climate protection. In the Main Franconia region, the University of Würzburg and the Würzburg-Schweinfurt University of Technology are bringing their knowledge and expertise to fill this week with exciting formats. The aim of the initiative is to deeply integrate topics of sustainability into teaching and to create awareness of the urgency of climate protection. The University of Würzburg reports that the program includes lectures, networking meetings, seminars, simulation games and workshops led by experts from both universities.

These events are open not only to students and members of the universities, but also to external interested parties who would like to actively address the challenges of the climate. The variety of formats enables broad access to knowledge and practical solutions.

A look at the event program

Among the highlights of the program week are workshops such as “Education in Times of Tipping Points,” which examines Kate Raworth’s theory of “doughnut economics” and encourages participants to apply these concepts to education. Speaker Prof. Dr. Bernd Ankenbrand will lead this interactive workshop, which will take place on Tuesday, November 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in Schweinfurt.

But that is only part of the extensive program. Other events such as simulation games to develop climate adaptation strategies and urban heat plans offer participants the opportunity to apply their knowledge and develop concrete solutions. Special lectures on topics such as social sustainability and the influence of sustainability on production and logistics will stimulate reflection and discussion.

The role of education

The PCS is more than just a series of workshops and lectures. It reflects the increasing awareness of the connection between education and sustainable development. As the Nutrition review shows, integrating sustainability into education is central to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The exchange between nutrition specialists and educational experts is particularly crucial in order to make optimal use of shared potential.

In view of global challenges such as climate change, species extinction and hunger, it is urgent that educational institutions assume their responsibility and actively contribute to solving these problems. The PCS offers an excellent platform to develop ideas and strategies together.
