Climate change: German responsibility and the urgent energy transition!

The challenges of climate change are more relevant than ever. Maja Göpel, a leading transformation researcher, makes it clear in an interview that awareness of the global connections in climate policy urgently needs to be increased. What is particularly worrying is the high concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, which has reached record levels. At the same time, climate protection is often neglected, which leads to distorted perceptions. Many Germans believe their country will be less affected by climate change, while Europe is the fastest warming continent. This misjudgment could have serious consequences, especially since the causes and effects of climate change are invisible and often only become noticeable with a time delay, explains Göpel.

Another critical point she raises is the strategy of disinformation promoted by some fossil interests. This leads to an erosion of trust in scientific findings. German banks and insurance companies also issue urgent warnings: the costs of not acting on climate change will continue to rise. Highly developed technologies, such as those promoted by electrification in China, could help Germany not to fall behind in the technological competition.

Difficult discussion about fossil solutions

Public opinion in Germany about fossil solutions is divided. A return to gas is seen by many as a surprise. Dependencies on fossil fuels, particularly LNG imports, are seen as problematic. In such a discussion, Göpel calls for a more stringent implementation of the energy transition and greater European integration in order to effectively address the climate goals.

An often overlooked point is that climate protection is considered a luxury in society. It is crucial to also take into account the interests of weaker households. Proposals such as climate money and infrastructure investments could help improve access to healthy food and adequate mobility for all.

Economic perspectives and new impulses

The role of energy efficiency must also be considered in the context of this discussion. Current analyzes of the German Bundesbank show that meeting climate targets can at the same time generate positive growth impulses in the economy. The right combination of measures in particular can lead to Germany increasing its economic performance while reducing CO2 emissions.

A central aspect here is the short-term orientation in climate policy. It is necessary to create clear cost-benefit balances to illustrate the benefits of sustainable measures. Politicians are called upon to clearly communicate the importance of climate goals and to emphasize the social responsibility associated with them.

The world's richest actors are being criticized for abandoning the promise of a secure life for all. The issue of climate protection must therefore be taken seriously by all levels of society in order to enable effective and long-term change.
